3 Ways to Make Your New Home Smarter

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you are getting ready to build a new home, you may want to sit down with your contractor and consider what type of smart features you want to incorporate into your home. Smart features have gone from a costly accessory to an affordable element that most new homes incorporate in some way or another. Here are five ways you could make your new home "smarter."

Install Smart Appliances

One of the easiest ways to make your home smart is by installing smart appliances. You can construct your kitchen just like you planned. However, instead of installing regular appliances, you will be installing smart appliances with features such as

  • LED touchscreen displays
  • Alarms to let you know when you've left your fridge open too long
  • Sensors in your microwave that will accurately gauge when your food is cooked
  • Ovens that can store recipes

These smart appliances will cost more than their regular counterparts, but they will not require any construction modifications.

Install a Smart Thermostat System

Your contractor is already going to install a thermostat system throughout your home to control your heating and cooling needs, so why not upgrade to a smart thermostat?

A smart thermostat system will allow you to link your thermostat to your phone and computers so that you can remotely control the temperature in your home. Getting out of your chair to change the thermostat will become a thing of the past, as will rushing home to cool off or heat up your house because you forgot to adjust the thermostat before you left.

Smart thermostats should also provide you with greater control over your heating and cooling costs.

Install Wireless Lighting

Your thermostat isn't the only thing you can control with your phone. You can also have your contractor wire up all of your outlets so you can wirelessly control your lighting.

This will allow you to adjust your lights from the other room. It will also allow you to adjust the lights from outside of your home. For example, if you come home late and realize you forgot to turn the lights on when you left earlier that day, you can remotely turn on your lights. Or if you go on vacation, you can turn your lights on and off while you are gone to make it look like someone is home.

Be sure to sit down with your contractor, one like Genuine Home Builders Inc, and discuss if you can add these three smart features to your new home.
