Entry Doors: How To Repair 3 Common Issues

Construction & Contractors Blog

Entry doors are designed to withstand various outdoor elements as well as the wear and tear of daily life. They are made with durable materials that are usually pretty impact-resistant. Eventually, though, dents can occur as can other damage. There are also some maintenance tasks that need to be performed in order to keep an entry door functioning properly. Here are three problems that you may face at some point in time with your home's front door and what to do about them:

Is Your Entry Door Sticking?

As a general rule, if your door is sticking, you just need to do some adjustment to the door size. Sometimes, it may just be a piece of debris or a large accumulation of dirt along the edges. So, your first step is to look for any large obstacles that could be causing your door to stick. Next, clean up around the door edges and the door jam. If the door is still sticking, you'll want to adjust the hinges to see if you can solve the problem that way. Look to see if the door is jamming at the top or bottom and adjust the appropriate hinge.

Does Your Door Have Unsightly Dents?

Most entry doors are made out of steel. In some cases, an auto filler can be used to successfully repair the dent. First, sand the area down to the metal. Apply the filler, let it dry and sand it to remove any bubbles. If the door is still not smooth and the dent is still present, apply another layer and repeat until you have smoothed the dent out.

Are the Door's Hinges Squeaking?

One of the most aggravating things in the world at home can be a squeaky door. You use the door several times a day, which means that squeakiness drives you made several times a day. Luckily, it doesn't take much to remedy the problem. Usually, you just need to apply some silicone spray or penetrating oil to the hinges. In order to lubricate the door hinges, you'll need to first remove the pin. When you do this, make sure to scrub it, along with the hinge itself, with a piece of steel wool. Spray all pieces before putting the pin back in place.

If these solutions don't fix your entry door problem, you may want to speak to a professional (such as one from Crawford Door Sales Of Nevada Ltd) for expert guidance and assistance. The last thing you want to do is cause more damage to your door, which will require the need for a brand new one.
