Selecting an air conditioner for your home can be a difficult endeavor, but there are actually a huge number of options out there. You don't necessarily need to get a central unit, so here are some alternatives that might interest you:
Portable Air Conditioners
If you aren't interested in a central AC system, then a portable unit might be one of the best alternatives. With a portable AC, you don't need to have a complicated ventilation system set up, and you don't need to worry about maintaining your air ducts. Instead, you just need a bit of free space in your home and easy access to the outside of your home. In some cases, this can be as simple as drilling a small hole in the wall of your home.
The reason that you need that hole or some other access point to the exterior is that you need somewhere to vent the heat waste of your AC. Every AC generates more heat than cold air (refrigerators work this way too), so you need to separate the hot and the cold in order to actually create a usable product. If you don't, then the temperature in your home will go up, rather than down.
Thankfully, portable ACs often come with small installation kits that can help you set up such a system. As was mentioned earlier, this can be done through a hole in the wall, though windows are also an option. There should be some instructions with your AC on exactly how you should set up the heat waste disposal.
Ductless Air Conditioners
For a different approach, you could consider getting a ductless air conditioner. The general idea of a ductless air conditioner is that you have a condenser on the outside of the home, as you would have with a regular central AC. However, this condenser transports cool air into your home through a specialized conduit rather than through a series of ducts.
On the plus side, this means that you won't need to maintain a series of ducts in your home. Ducts can also lead to a slight loss of efficiency, so switching to a ductless system could potentially reduce the amount of cold air that is wasted.
You will also need to set up an individual output unit in each room that you want to cool. If you do not set up a unit in a given room, then it will not be cooled nearly as much as other rooms. This actually offers you quite a bit of choice when it comes to determining which rooms you want to cool, since that can influence your utility costs quite a bit. By only selecting the most important rooms for cooling, you can reduce the amount of energy that is wasted on cooling areas of your home that don't need it as much.
