Basement Flooded After A Bad Rain? 3 Steps To Take To Get It Back To Normal

Construction & Contractors Blog

If your basement flooded after a bad rain, you know how much damage this can cause. Because of this, you need to act quickly before damage becomes more extensive. To get started, below are three steps you should take to help get your basement back to normal.  Before you do anything, however, you need to contact your local power company to disconnect electrical services before you walk into your basement.

Remove Water

Once everything is out it is time to remove the water. If the basement is not severely flooded, you may be able to do this on your own using a wet/dry shop vac. Turn the setting to wet and attach the tube. Turn the machine on and then use the tube to suck up the water. You will have to stop periodically to empty the canister. Continue doing this until all water is removed.

If you have too much water to easily remove it on your own, you need to hire a flood restoration company to remove the water for you.

Start the Drying Process

Once all water is removed, it is time to start the drying process. In order to do this, you need to use fans. Larger industrial fans work best as they are much stronger. Place several fans around the basement and run the fans 24/7, if possible. Along with fans, also place dehumidifiers close to the walls. Use several dehumidifiers so you can control moisture that forms on walls. This will help prevent mold and mildew growth, which is a whole other problem you would have to deal with.

One thing you may need to remove before you start the drying process is the carpeting if your basement is carpeted. This is especially true if the water stayed in your basement for a long period of time. Peel back a section of carpeting and check the pad. If the pad is soaked all the way through, then you need to remove the carpeting and the pad.

Prevent Floods in Future

Once your basement is back to normal, it is time to waterproof the basement to prevent floods in the future. There are many waterproofing methods you can choose from. One easy type is to paint the interior walls with a waterproofing material. This works but does not work well to prevent a flood during a hard rain.

Another type of waterproofing method is building a trench and drain around the perimeter of your home. Along with the trench is a pump is installed. To install the drain, the company will dig the trench and then lay a few inches of gravel in the trench. They will then lay the pipes on the gravel and then cover the piping with soil. When it rains, the pump will push the water through the pipes to direct the water to another area.

Talk with the basement waterproofing company to learn much more information about these waterproofing methods. They can also tell you of other methods they can use to help you.
